What to check on a used compact camera

Retracting lens — switch the camera on and off several times. The lens must extend and retract smoothly, with no grinding noise and no sticking. This is the most common failure on a compact.
Front element — a compact has no separate lens cap, so the front glass rubs against pockets. Look for marks.
Sensor — shoot a plain bright sky at the smallest aperture and zoom in to look for dark spots. You cannot clean a compact's sensor yourself; it has to go to a service centre.
Screen and buttons — touchscreen, dials and zoom lever must all respond; the flip screen should not be loose.
Battery and charging port — newer compacts charge over USB; plug in and check the charging light comes on.

Mostly not, unlike interchangeable-lens cameras, so you judge by the outside condition, how the retracting lens works and the sensor instead. You can check all of that at the shop.
