RF vs EF — what to know before buying used Canon
Every EOS R camera uses the RF mount, while the older DSLRs use EF (and EF-S for APS-C). EF lenses fit RF cameras through the EF-EOS R adapter and work fully; RF lenses do not fit DSLRs.
In practice, if you buy a used EOS R body, used EF lenses are a very good saving: there are plenty on the market and prices have come down a long way, for the cost of one adapter.
Checking the shutter count on a Canon
Canon does not show the shutter count in the camera menu, but it can be read from a computer with software that queries the camera directly (the EOS shutter-count tools). On some EOS R models the figure is also in the image EXIF. Details are in the shutter count guide (Thai). Items we have checked carry the number on the product page.
Which used Canon suits whom
- EOS R6 / R6 Mark II — full-frame for real work: strong autofocus, good in low light, suits events, portraits and video.
- EOS R50 / R10 / R7 — APS-C from beginner to mid-level, light and affordable.
- PowerShot G7 X / G9 X — 1-inch sensor compacts for everyday carry and vlogging.
- RF 70-200mm f/2.8 — a professional telephoto zoom whose used price falls slowly.
